March 4, 2011 - Owen Applequist

How many adult cancer survivors can say they found out they had cancer from their own mom? Owen Applequist did. His mom is a physician. Owen was diagnosed with hodgkins lymphoma when he was 26. Not letting that stop him he kept working and staying active. 15 months later he was diagnosed with non hodgkins lymphoma. Owen had already planned to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. He was determined not to let his cancer keep him from living life to the fullest. Just 95 days after completing his chemotherapy he summited Mt. Kilimanjaro. Owen raises awareness and money during his climbs and he is currently becoming an instructor for First Descents, an organization that offers mountain climbing and other outdoor adventure sports for cancer survivors.

February 18, 2011 - Joanna Isbill

When Joanna Isbill was diagnosed with thyroid cancer 2 years ago at the age of 24 she couldn't find any other thyroid cancer survivors her own age, let alone information about the disease. She was fortunate to find Dear Thyroid founded by Katie Schwartz who has graves disease, another thyroid auto immune disease. Now Joanna is one of the main bloggers on Dear Thyroid as well as a moderator on Cancer Connect, another great resource for cancer survivors.

February 11, 2011 - Ann Fonfa

Ann Fonfa was diagnosed with breast cancer 19 years ago. Because of her severe allergic reactions to chemicals she opted not to do chemo and radiation, but instead tried a variety of complementary therapies. Although she had several recurring tumors on her chest wall during the 8 years she battled cancer from 1993-2001 she continued to use complementary therapies when complementary (then called alternative) therapy was not recognized by the medical community. Declared cancer free in 2001 she wanted to share her findings with others. In 2003 she founded the Annie Appleseed Project, an organization that provides information on all kinds of therapies, complementary as well as traditional. Find out more about Ann and how you can attend a conference on complementary therapies in March with several experts in that field.
